Snagged from [livejournal.com profile] songspell. I thought I'd pass it around as well, since I happen to know a few female gamers:

The D12 Handbag ^_^

So, I know I didn't post earlier in the week about the fact that George Carlin died. *shrug* Everybody else was already posting and I didn't have anything to add.

However... I just heard on the radio that, since Carlin was the first-ever guest host on SNL, NBC is re-playing the SNL episode from 1975 this coming Saturday night. I thought that would be something really cool to catch, and thought others might want to know about it too.

I also found a great tribute piece while I was looking that up... Funny Folk Salute [Expletive-Deleted] George Carlin.

So, this may be common knowledge, but I'd never seen it before. Apparently, you can access PennDOT cameras online in real time. So... if I want to see if construction has 376 backed up? Not a problem.

One of my co-workers thinks it's just more proof that I'm really lame, but I think that's just really, really cool ^_^

Hope it's been a calm one ^_^

Okay... I'm sure people have thought of this or seen it before, but it's the first time I've actually thought about it at all, and it looks kind of interesting.

Vertical Farming... a move to Urban-environment farming (Link found in some comments on a post by [livejournal.com profile] mrgrumpybear.)

I'm curious if folks out in LJ-land can tell me why this _isn't_ as good an idea as it sounds. 'Cause it sounds like a very viable option to me. (Well, once you find some way to fund the original conversions or constructions.)

(Note: Obviously, this isn't something to take advantage of if you're not already planning to spend the money... but if you're already planning to go out to dinner or something it should be a better value. Theoretically, anyway.)

So, I listen to 100.7 in the mornings, and they routinely hype their "Half-Price Meal Deals" on Wed mornings... the idea is that they have gift certificates for certain places and sell them at approx half the face value. However, today was the first time I went and really looked, and I noticed a few interesting things.

First is that some of the certificates only allow you to use one per table per visit, but most of the deals are actually BOGO on the certificates... so you wind up with two certificates and can only use one at a time. Now, I don't think this is the case for all of them, but it's something to watch out for.

Second is that they continue to make available the coupons that didn't sell in previous weeks (in the upper left hand corner of the page). So, even if this week's doesn't look good or is already sold out, there are other options still available.

Third is that they are one of _six_ sister sites. So they have links to 5 other places that are _also_ offering gift certificates at half price and which all _also_ have remaining certificates listed. So, if one site doesn't have something you want, maybe the others ones do.

The six sister sites are 100.7's Half Price Meal Deal, KDKA's The Real Meal Deal, KDKA's Di$count Deal$, B94's The Big Deal , Y108's 2 for 1 Meal Deal, and KDKA's Golf Deals. (That last one is so not my thing, but... *shrug*)

So, this is popping up in some of the un-related parts of my Friends page, but not in what I think of as the main part of my friends page, which is a pretty large group of folks who all overlap in knowing each other.

Anyway... it seems that SUP has been making some major changes to how LJ accounts are created and how they want to handle advertising. I'm still not sure exactly where I stand on any of it, but [livejournal.com profile] leora has been my main source for information about some of the potentially upsetting changes being made to LJ, so I'll point you to a recent post by her explaining some of the current issues and linking to a potentially useful article. (I hope you don't mind the extra traffic, [livejournal.com profile] leora.)

Also, [livejournal.com profile] penumbren posted this call for a one-day content strike so that the LJ community can show the Powers That Be how we feel about these kinds of issues. I'm putting it behind a cut... feel free to read and re-post as you see fit. (Please forgive me if the formatting gets screwed up... I don't have time to check it all, and my html skills are passable, but minimal.) Call for an LJ Strike )

[livejournal.com profile] fiannaharpar made a post a few weeks ago that I thought would be worth passing along, since I'm currently thinking about it.

There is a Christian group called Angel Food Ministries that provides food at a bulk discount rate. The general idea is to help those who are "in need", but they also specifically state that "if you eat, you qualify"... they don't require you to have a particularly low income. I am guessing that how pushy they are about Chrisitanity depends on the location... but I'm hopeful that it's not too much.

The bulk discount part is that they offer a pre-set box of stuff once a month... that changes from month to month. It costs $30 for the box. I've looked at it both of the last two months, and the box has a nice variety of food in it. It's a little hard for me to think I'll do it every month, since I'm picky and I'd hate to waste stuff. But this month looks like almost all stuff I'll eat ^_^ And they have "Specials" each month that are an extra box of somethiing (often some selection of meats) for around $20. Although you can't buy just the "Special" boxes. You have to order at the beginning of the month and pick up at the end of the month.

Anyway... I think this could be really useful for us, at least while I'm still waiting on the stupid raise/promotion. And I thought there are probably other people on my friends list who could use it. And they have ministries in lots of states. So... I'm spreading the word.

Hopefully, we'll be dropping our order form off at the Oakland location tomorrow. I'll try to remember to post about how it goes for us this month.

The cute little critter was too much to pass up.

So, ya know how I mentioned all the people coming in to town to visit for the weekend and go to the SCA event? Apparently, it wasn't exactly a coincidence. 'Cause I got a new award yesterday. I am now the newest member of the Order of the Pelican in AEthelmearc.

Which... um... wow. For those of you who aren't SCA... it's a _big_ deal.

It really hasn't sunk in yet. Really not. But there's a really pretty Roana and Hrefna scroll to go with it... and I think it's even on vellum. And a hood that's not quite done. And... yeah. I'm still not sure I'm ready to be 'Dame Ailis'... but I suppose I'll learn.

There is a decent chance that there are pictures... and possibly a video (?*&$#@*?), so I will share the links for those when I have them.

Um... yeah. Wow.

So, I saw an article about these in an old magazine, and [livejournal.com profile] almondroy just reminded me to actually go looking for the website.

Because you just can't get the true feel for life in Da 'Burgh without a Pitsburghese talking doll (aka Yappin' Yinzer)!

So, I'm not quite sure about the motivation, but the Democratic party has put up a straw poll asking democrats to vote for which Republican candidate would be the best choice for Republicans.

Honestly, I think they're looking for names and e-mails to add to their mailing list, since those are required fields. But still... Kind of interesting.

For those of you who don't read [livejournal.com profile] shimmeringjemmy's art journal...

There's a potentially interesting book/music/art tour that one of her pieces is being shown in that will be hitting the East Coast this coming weekend. The tour is related to Catherynne M. Valente's new novel The Orphan's Tales: In the Cities of Coin and Spice, which I have to admit to knowing nothing about. But it looks like something some of you might enjoy.

Details of when and where the shows are... since I don't see that info on the website. )

I doubt that a trip out to Philly is in my future for this weekend, though.

My inbox has been gloriously spam light for the past couple days, but I'm afraid I'm missing other messages. Is anyone else out there not getting mail through their lj e-mail address?

Not so bad

Today actually didn't turn out to be as bad as I'd feared. Relatively productive and not too much of the cranky.

Thank goodness for small favors.

At least it's not one of the utopias. I'm not in the mood to get stuck in a utopia.

Which Sci-Fi crew would I fit in best with? )

I opened up my e-mail account today, and there were brand new messages that went a week and a half back. Oy! Of course, most of them were spam.

No wonder it's been so easy to manage my messages this past week ^_^

As of approximately 12:30 tonight (when I will hopefully be sleeping), [livejournal.com profile] demonlurking and I will have been dating for 5 years. *grin*

Happy Anniversary, Love!!!

So, I went up to my aunt and uncle's house tonight to help with getting it ready for my uncle to finally go home from the hospital. It has been crazy hectic up there, since they had to do a ton of renovations. Amongst those, was getting a handicap-usable van. Which means...

They're selling their current minivan. It's 2-3 years old and has less than 50K miles on it. (They travel to visit their kids a lot.) The current asking price is under $17K. It's posted on Craig's list, if anyone is interested.

I'm also going to post to the BMDL list, since I imagine there might be some SCAdians out there looking for bigger modes of transportation ^_^ Hopefully they find something soon. This whole process has been a huge drain on their resources.

Now... bed... have to be up at 5 again. So not sure that's gonna happen. But I shall have to try.
